We invite researchers interested in the phonetics and phonology of signed
languages to come discuss current trends in the areas of notation and
analysis.
Registration is free.
Organizing Committee:
Kyle Duarte
Sylvie Gibet
Wednesday, July 6, 9:00 - 18:00
- Robert E. Johnson, building on previous presentations at phonetics
workshops held in Orsay, France, June 2008, November 2008, and May
2009, will offer a short review and detailed update of the notation system he
and Scott Liddell have been developing.
Thursday, July 7, 9:00 - 17:00
- Mini-workshop on phonetic annotation and technology: challenges
encountered and novel solutions. Participants interested in giving short
presentations of how they have used software for annotation or analysis are
invited to submit an abstract.
- Mini-workshop on sign analysis: participants' data. All participants are
asked to bring interesting phonetic or phonological examples from their data
(difficult-to-annotate hand configurations; phonological processes, for
example from surrounding signs; complex sign asynchronicity or asymmetry;
etc.).
Friday, July 8, 9:00 - 12:30
- Mini-workshop/challenge in groups: 20-second video annotation.
Participants will be provided with a 20-second video clip and will be asked to
annotate their data according to the Liddell and Johnson phonetic notation
system. Results will be compared and discussed.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and
as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a
registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-
6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information
visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails
your contacting your human resources department and sending us a form
that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is
generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your
gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
