University or Organization: University of Amsterdam
Department: Language and Literature
Job Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Web Address: http://www.hum.uva.nl/aclc-vacancies/vacancies.cfm
Job Rank: Associate Professor

Specialty Areas: Germanic Linguistics

Description:

Background
This position stems from the Faculty of Humanities' decision to merge the
existing associate professorships in the field of German Linguistics (?Prof. Dr
Hans den Besten) and Scandinavian Linguistics (Dr Harry Perridon, Dr Aad
Quak) into a single associate professorship for Germanic Linguistics. This
associate professorship is complementary to existing full professorships for
English Linguistics (Prof. Olga Fischer) and Dutch Linguistics (Prof. Fred
Weerman) and a vacancy for an associate professor in Dutch Linguistics.

Characterization of the position
Teaching on the linguistics of Germanic languages takes place in the BA and
MA programmes of Dutch, English, German and Scandinavian, and in the
minor programme on Frisian. It will be the task of the associate professor to
be appointed to teach at least German and Scandinavian linguistics, but
preferably also English and possibly Dutch linguistics. Furthermore, the
selected candidate will be in charge of developing courses in comparative
synchronic and diachronic Germanic linguistics that may play a role in all the
programmes mentioned above as well as in the programmes on general
linguistics. Research on Germanic languages takes place within the research
groups of the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication and could
in principle touch on all the issues that these research groups are concerned
with, though given the requirements of the teaching component of this
position it would most likely be historical or comparative in nature.

Teaching/Education
Teaching in the field of Germanic linguistics is relevant to the Department of
Language and Literature and the Department of Dutch. The Faculty's
Bachelor programmes are overseen by the College of Humanities. Masters
and PhD education is overseen by the Graduate School of Humanities.

Research
The Faculty of Humanities has three research priority areas: (1) Globalization
and Cultural Transformations; (2) Cultural Heritage and Identity; and (3) Brain
and Cognition. The professor of Germanic Linguistics will be active in the last
priority area.

Requirements
The associate professor of Germanic Linguistics must hold a PhD in
Linguistics and demonstrate broad expertise and experience in the field. The
successful candidate will be able to contribute substantively to theoretical
reflections on the study of Germanic languages and engage actively in
empirical research. She/he will have a strong international reputation, an
excellent publication record, and a proven track record of acquiring external
research funding. The successful candidate will have broad working
experience - including internationally - in university settings, and will have
experience supervising graduate students and doctoral candidates. She/he
will have an active international network The candidate must have a fluent
command of both Dutch and English and preferably in one of the
Scandinavian languages as well; any appointee lacking this level of linguistic
competence will be expected to acquire it within two years of taking up the
post. In keeping with university policy, candidates should hold a doctoral
degree and have at least three years of work experience at a university or
academic research institute other than the UvA, preferably abroad.
