In an ever-shrinking world, the goal of a second language classroom is to provide students with the skills to successfully navigate both social and professional situations in their second language. Because second language students have changed drastically in the past 25 years, it is important that L2 methodology keep pace with its students. Today's second language student has grown up using technology and engages with the world in a variety of outlets that did not exist 25 years ago. Since these students are often more comfortable with a keyboard than they are with a pen, it begs the question: how can the current research on teaching second languages help us to improve methodology and better prepare our students to successfully use their second language in the 21st century? How can we adapt to better address the needs of our second language learners so that they can effectively participate in social and professional situations outside of the L2 classroom?
This conference is a day of workshops on teaching foreign and second languages in the 21st century.
Registration for conference workshops is free but is required for both presenters and participants. Please send an email to the address listed above with the subject line 'Registration'. In the body of your email please include your full name, affiliation, and whether you are a presenter or participant. We ask that you please register by February 22nd at the latest.
Call for Papers:
We encourage workshops pertaining to all second and foreign languages, including ESL, but we ask that workshops be conducted primarily in English for the benefit of all participants. Please consider ways in which you can help participants apply the content of your workshop to their own classrooms (especially in those classrooms focusing on languages other than your own specialty). Workshops should be interactive and offer the participants skills and activities that they can modify to fit their own teaching situation.
Workshops will be 45 minutes in length and will be followed by a 15-minute question and answer period.
Possible session topics include, but are not limited to:
- L2 language skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading, and cultural competence
- L2 knowledge sets such as vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and pronunciation
Please submit a 250-word proposal for your workshop session to L2WorkshopsAtUB at gmail.com in .doc or .pdf format. Proposals should not include your name and affiliation, but please do include this information in your email. Include in your email a note about any technological requirements you have. We will have rooms equipped to project PowerPoint presentations and online resources as well as a computer lab available.
The deadline for workshop submissions is November 16th. Conference organizers will notify presenters of acceptance of proposals by December 1st.
