Meeting Description:

Setting the Course for Pronunciation Teaching and Assessment

The 4th Annual Conference
Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching
Simon Fraser University (Vancouver Campus)
Vancouver, British Columbia
August 24-25, 2012

Pronunciation has moved from being a central feature of language teaching and assessment to being largely ignored, but today, pronunciation is again becoming an integral rather than a peripheral part of language teaching and assessment. This conference explores visions of how pronunciation can become more integrated into language teaching and learning and into language assessment.

Plenary Speaker:

Pavel Trofimovich
Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec
'Teaching Second Language Pronunciation: From the Psycholinguistic Lab to the Language Classroom'

Call for Papers:

Submissions for papers and posters are welcome for any topic related to pronunciation teaching and learning, and especially for presentations related to the theme of the conference, including

1. How can pronunciation teaching be more effectively targeted so that teaching and learning are more likely to improve speech comprehensibility?
2. How can pronunciation be integrated into instruction?
3. What is the most appropriate role of technology in pronunciation learning?
4. What is the role of pronunciation in assessing oral communication ability?
5. What are the washback effects of including pronunciation in speaking tests?
6. How can speech intelligibility be assessed reliably?

Proposals must be submitted December 15, 2011 through April 10, 2012 at:

http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/PSLLT2012

A special feature of this conference is a roundtable on pronunciation assessment, to be held on August 25, 2012.

Papers will be given in English, and presenters will be invited to submit their papers for a peer-reviewed, on-line proceedings of the conference.
