Meeting Description:
Young Scholars Colloquium (DIPRALANG-EA739, Université Montpellier III)
Current Methodological Issues in Linguistics: Directions, Materials, Limits
Place: Paul Valéry University (Montpellier III)
We would like to question research methodology in Linguistics as of today. The object, the criteria, the theoretical positioning and the approach chosen would be some of the themes for discussion. Do we need theoretical and disciplinary rigidity? Or is a transversal approach relevant? How does the researcher construct his methodology? What are the limits that he faces? These questions imply the positioning of the researcher as to the choice of the theoretical framework and as to working on hypotheses, (field) observation and collection of data, analysis of these data and research results. Three working axes are proposed and doctoral students wishing to participate may send their proposals replying to any one of these.
Axis 1: Epistemology, History of Research Methodology and Theoretical Positioning of the Researcher
It seems important to consider the history of the appearance and the development of sub-disciplines in Linguistics and the development of approaches and the positioning of the researcher. By whom and how were the different methodologies inspired, formulated, developed? Can we posit a cause-effect relationship between the sub-disciplines and methodological heterogeneity?
Axis 2: Practices of Collection of Data: Sampling and its Limits
What data, for which fields and according to which theories and which point of view, would be some of the questions dealt with in this axe. What are the different types of corpus? Is the collection of data guided by the choice of the subject? And once the subject is chosen, what are the different methods of collection of data? Are they to be opposed, confronted, homogeneised, criticised?
Axis 3: Analytical Practices
Once the data is collected there is also a multplicity of approaches in the way in which they may be treated and analysed. What are these different approaches? Should we oppose them or look up for complementarity? What are the effects on the material collected and on the gaze adopted by the researcher?
