Dissertation Abstract:

This work aims at giving perspective to the position of French in the
South-African democratic process, whose history is not linked to that of
the francophone world. The outlook for French changes with perceptions of
the language and, in turn, with the challenges faced by secondary school
teachers and university researchers of French, on whom innovation depends.
In fact, as an African language, French represents several points of
interest for South Africa's international position, as well as for its
contribution to the renegotiation of identity/ otherness, given that French
is perceived as a valued opening to other forms of plurality. This research
leads ultimately to questioning the type of relations established with
francophone situations labelled as being in the minority.
