Description:

The School of Arts and Social Sciences at Northumbria University is offering a
number of PhD studentships. Please see the information and web links below for
studentship opportunities in the area of language and linguistics.

Deadline for application is Tuesday 1st March, 2011.
Interviews will be held in the week commencing 4 April 2011.

Research studentships website:
http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/researchandconsultancy/graduateschool/prospectivepgrs/studentships/sass/

Language Learning and Teaching (Ref: ECW4)
This includes both first and second language learning, especially the later
stages of development and the acquisition of academic literacy in the first or
second language; language teaching and assessment; individual differences in
acquisition and ultimate attainment; classroom centred research; and teacher
education and development.

Language Attitudes/Folklinguistics (Ref: ECW5)
The study of language attitudes is a key dimension in the building of
sociolinguistic theory. Joining a team of established and active researchers in
folklinguistics, applications involving innovative techniques measuring
attitudes towards language variation amongst first language and/or second
language users are particularly welcomed.

(Critical) Discourse Analysis and Stylistics (Ref: ECW6)
Discourse analysis is a vibrant and interdisciplinary field which includes
research areas such as critical discourse analysis, stylistics, and language and
gender. We particularly welcome applications from candidates interested in
cognitive approaches to discourse analysis and/or the discourse and stylistic
features in the use of contemporary Chinese-English in both literary and
non-literary contexts.

Successful applicants will receive:
- A full fee waiver (home and EU students only)
- A bursary of up to £13,590 per annum
- A 30-hour teaching preparation course involving teaching practice and
shadowing of experienced staff
- A dedicated work station within a good quality working environment
- Access to funds to support research expenses (conferences or archive visits)

Who we are looking for:
We are looking to recruit candidates of the highest quality with the capability
of submitting excellent theses within the standard PhD duration of 3 years. You
will need to demonstrate a strong performance in your first degree (probably a
first) as well as a good MA qualification. We will, however, consider candidates
straight from undergraduate degrees where there is evidence of exceptional
academic ability. Prospective candidates from overseas should contact us
concerning entry requirements (at az.pgr at northumbria.ac.uk).

Informal enquiries are welcome. Please contact: Professor Allan Ingram,
allan.ingram at northumbria.ac.uk

To apply, please use the School of Arts and Social Sciences online application
form and submit to Scott Burdon at az.pgr at northumbria.ac.uk.
