================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Duration: 17-May-2011 to 02-Sep-2011
Compensation: Paid Competitive
Internship Location: Los Angeles, California, USA
Minimum Education Level: No Minimum
Special Qualifications: Required: A strong, well-developed ability to write scripts and computer programs that manipulate textual data.
Required: Ability to write scripts or programs for running tools and program components.
Required: Strong programming ability and experience of writing efficient programs for processing large amounts of data in at least one language.
Desired: Familiarity with java and java IDEs.
Desired: Some familiarity with speech recognition software.
Desired: Some experience with quantitative evaluation of software performance (using notions like precision, recall, f-score, word error rate, etc.).
Desired: Knowledge of n-gram language modeling.
Desired: Basic knowledge of phonology.

Description:
The project will evaluate and extend a Natural Language Understanding module (NLU) endowed with phonetic knowledge, intended to overcome small errors in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). It builds on a proof-of-concept from last year, which showed that a phonetic dictionary can help NLU recover from certain speech recognition errors that result in a string of words with similar sounds but different meaning from the actual spoken words. The project will continue development of this module, and include a rigorous evaluation to determine how to make best use of the added phonetic information.

The intern will develop and evaluate phonetic tokenizers that extract different kinds of phonetic information from words, as well as develop and evaluate machine-learning algorithms for finding the most effective combination of word-level and phone-level features. There will be a strong emphasis on evaluation and interpretation of the results.
