Call for Papers:
Automatic Analysis of Learner Language (AALL III):
'The fickle alignment of NLP and CALL'
This workshop continues the tradition of Intelligent Computer Assisted
Language Learning (ICALL) workshops that took place in 2006, 2008
and 2009. We want to bring together researchers and practitioners
working in ICALL related projects that represent the current state of the
art in the field. Our goal is to promote the exchange ideas and to
provide opportunities to collaborative work and networking.
We invite researchers to submit abstracts for 20-minute presentations
followed by 10-minute discussion periods. Submissions of anonymous
one-page abstracts should be sent by email with the abstract as a pdf
attachment. Name, affiliation, and email address should only be
included in the text of the email.
We encourage submissions addressing these general issues, including
but not limited to:
The use of Natural Language Processing in CALL
Innovative technologies and empirical studies on ICALL projects
Automatic learner modeling
Development of L2 corpora
Automatic annotation of learner errors, and error taxonomies for ICALL
ICALL in individualized and distance learning contexts
Second language acquisition research and ICALL
Foreign language teaching practice and ICALL
Measures of language development
As the subtitle of this workshop suggests (which we borrowed from
Lars Borin's paper), it is a matter of debate what exactly the role of NLP
should be in CALL. We also encourage submissions of proposals that
concentrate on theoretical issues pertaining to the development of NLP
to process language produced by non-native speakers.
The workshop will consist of 10 - 12 paper presentations, a round
table discussion and possibly a poster session.
The deadline for submissions has been extended.
New deadline: 15 February 2011
Please submit your proposals (300 words maximum and names of
presenters on a separate page)to peter.wood at usask.ca or to
amaral at spanport.umass.edu. Please use the following reference line in
your e-mail: IICALL 2011
The workshop is organized by the ICALL Special Interest Group of
CALICO, currently chaired by Luiz Amaral and Peter Wood.
