Meeting Description:
It is our pleasure to announce the Sixth International Symposium on Politeness,
organized by the Department of Foreign Language Education, Middle East Technical
University, Ankara.
The special theme of this three-day conference, endorsed by the Linguistic
Politeness Research Group(LPRG), is 'Corpus-based and Corpus-driven Approaches
to Politeness and Intercultural Communication'. Papers related to any
theoretical and/or applied aspect of (im)politeness and intercultural
communication are, however, also welcome. The special theme is motivated by
current debates in pragmatics and (im)politeness research, including but not
restricted to the following:
- The contribution of (multimodal) corpora to enhancing understandings of
interpersonal communication (e.g., studying affect, emotion and non-verbal
elements in (im)politeness)
- Methodological issues related to the collection, creation, annotation, and
comparability of data in inter- and cross-cultural studies
- How corpus approaches can contribute to theorizing on (im)politeness and
intercultural communication.
The conference will feature plenary lectures, panels, individual papers and posters.
Plenary Speakers:
Christine Christie, Loughborough University
Istvan Kecskes, State University of New York, Albany
Maria Sifianou, University of Athens
Helen Spencer-Oatey, University of Warwick
