Description:
The Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) in Mannheim, Germany, invites
applications for three full-time scientific staff positions in the project
'Next-Generation Corpus Analysis Platform'. The project intends to provide
a methodologically sound basis for empirical linguistic research on very
large corpora. The platform shall be able to deal with primary data and
multiple layers of annotation in the peta-byte range.
*Computer scientist or computational linguist (maximum salary: according to
E14 TV-L; application code: 4 / 11)
Responsibilities:
- Head of software development and software engineering
- Participation in the implementation of the system
Requirements:
- University degree
- In-depth programming experience, particularly in C++ or Java
- Knowledge of linguistic corpora (e.g. BNC, DeReKo, Penn Treebank) and
corpus retrieval systems (e.g. COSMAS, TigerSearch)
- Professional experience
- Good command of English or German
*Computer scientist or computational linguist (maximum salary: according to
E13 TV-L; application code: 5 / 11)
Responsibilities:
- Design of server-side data storage components
- Design of interfaces, especially web services
- Participation in the implementation of the system
Requirements:
- University degree or equivalent qualification
- Solid experience in database design, especially for unstructured text data
- Knowledge of text retrieval systems for large amounts of data, e.g. Lucene
- In-depth programming experience, particularly in C++ or Java
- Good command of English or German
*Corpus linguist (maximum salary: according to E13 TV-L; application code:

Responsibilities:
- Analysis and development of linguistic annotations
- Modelling of methods in quantitative corpus analysis
Requirements:
- University degree in linguistics, German philology or equivalent
qualification
- Solid knowledge of markup languages
- Programming skills, especially in scripting languages, e.g. Perl, also XSLT
- Very good command of German
All applicants are expected to be willing to participate in scientific
publications and presentations.
The openings shall be filled by the 1st of March 2011 (or later) for an
initial period of two years.
The salary is figured according to the union contract named TV-L. The
filling of the positions will proceed in accordance with German law,
especially the directives laid out in the 'Allgemeines
Gleichbehandlungsgesetz' in its current version. Applications from disabled

The Institut für Deutsche Sprache is the central non-university institution
for the study and documentation of the contemporary usage and recent
history of the German language. Together with 79 non-university research
and service institutions, it belongs to the Leibniz Association, one of the
four major research organizations in Germany.
