Description:

Chair / Associate Professor in Sociolinguistics. 

Applications are invited for the above post in the Division of English
Studies based at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. The Division
of English Studies was founded in 2007, developing a range of Masters and
BA programmes in the areas of Applied Linguistics, English Language in the
Professions, Stylistics, Discourse Studies, Corpus Studies, Modern Literary
Studies and Psycholinguistics. The successful candidate will be expected to
deliver lectures and seminars across all years of the undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes and to supervise undergraduate, masters and PhD
dissertations in the areas related to the study of Applied Linguistics.  

The successful candidate will be responsible, in particular, for the
teaching of modules relating to the English language in the professions on
the new postgraduate programme, MSc in Communication and International
Entrepreneurship. Expertise is required in some of the following areas:
Professional Discourse, Sociolinguistics, English as an International
Language, (Critical) Discourse Analysis. In addition to teaching, the
successful candidate will be required to contribute to the development of a
significant research base at the University. It is expected that the
successful candidate will undertake directorship of the Division for an
agreed term of office. 

Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant discipline, together with academic
and team leadership skills, excellent research skills with an established
track record in research. Experience of teaching and tutorial work in
relevant subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level in an
international English-speaking institution is also essential. Candidates
for appointment at Chair level should, in addition, have an outstanding
record of academic achievement and demonstrable leadership qualities.

For an appointment to Associate Professor, salary will be within the range
of £46,510 - £55,535 per annum depending on qualifications and experience
(salary can progress to £66,295 per annum, subject to performance). For
Chair appointments, salary will be within the Professorial range, minimum
£55,535.  In addition, an attractive package including accommodation
allowance, travel allowance and insurance will be provided for
international appointments.

The post will initially be offered on a fixed term contract with the
University of Nottingham Ningbo, China for a period of up to 7 years with
effect from 1 July 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter. This contract
may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement, subject to
revised terms and conditions.
