First Call for Papers
Theme: Internalism versus Externalism
The 4th Amsterdam Graduate Philosophy Conference on 'Internalism versus Externalism' is devoted to explore how this distinction relates to problems in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, and philosophy of action. We invite submissions from young researchers who investigate the sides of this opposition, or its mere significance, in relation (but not restricted) to the following issues:
- competence vs. performance;
- meaning and reference;
- semantic normativity with respect to meaning, use, content, or context;
- the semantics-pragmatics distinction;
- mental content and causation;
- narrow and wide mental content;
- the extended mind hypothesis;
- knowledge, belief, and justification;
- reasons for action: justification vs. explanation.
We encourage contributions which try to bridge the gaps between linguistic, mental, epistemological, and action aspects of the issues mentioned above. Submissions that inform the discussion about internalism and externalism by offering a philosophical interpretation of results from other fields such as logic, decision theory, cognitive psychology, and linguistics, are also welcome.
Confirmed invited speakers:
- Martin Kusch (Vienna)
- Joëlle Proust (Paris)
- Michael Wheeler (Stirling)
Submission information
We invite submissions in the form of short papers (not longer than 4000 words) accompanied by a short abstract (not longer than 150 words). Papers for submission should be prepared for anonymous refereeing. The deadline for submission is 30 September and it should follow the on-line submission form, available at the conference website. Candidates eligible for submission are graduate students and those who have completed a doctoral dissertation within the last three years.
Successful candidates will be allotted a 45-minute time slot, comprising a 25-minute presentation, a short commentary by an appointed speaker, and discussion with the audience. Candidates will be notified by 31 October of whether their paper has been accepted for presentation. The speakers will have the chance to send a revised version of their paper, as well as a revised version of their abstract for publication in the conference book of abstracts.
Please note that submitting a paper does not automatically count as registration for the conference. Those who wish to participate must formally register for the conference; full details on how to do so can be found on the conference website.
