Interested in a PhD program in Clinical Linguistics?
Doctoral Program in Applied Language and Speech Sciences at the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette, Department of Communicative Disorders.

For those looking for a doctoral program in Clinical Linguistics, we would like
to draw to your attention the Ph.D. program in Applied Language and Speech
Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. We accept students in the
Fall (mid-August start) and the Spring (January start).
Like most Ph.D.s in the US, we require several semesters of advanced coursework,
before students proceed to the dissertation stage. Also, students need to have
taken the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and acquired acceptable scores
(http://www.ets.org/gre/). Courses on our program include, for example, clinical
linguistics (Systemic Functional Linguistics), clinical sociolinguistics,
qualitative research methods, experimental methods, and a wide range of
electives across the whole range of topics in communication disorders and
clinical linguistics. Details of the program are available on the departmental

We are looking for students with Master's degrees in communication disorders,
linguistics, or related subjects. Candidates with good undergraduate degrees are
also considered but will be required to do more course work credits. We welcome
candidates from the US and from other countries: we currently have students from
a wide range of countries (Ireland, Germany, Greece, Singapore, Turkey, Korea,
Guyana, Palestine; in the past from Canada, UK, China).

We have a certain amount of funding each year from our Graduate School for
Graduate Assistantships, Doctoral Fellowships, and Minority Fellowships. These
scholarships cover tuition fees, and provide a stipend for living expenses.
Graduate Assistants work within the department in return. Students on
scholarships are expected to be in residence in Lafayette, and the cost of
travel to Louisiana is not covered by these scholarships.

At this point we would like to urge anyone interested in a January 2012 start,
and with the relevant background, to formally apply as soon as possible. First,

a) A current CV, showing your GPA in current and recent degree programs, and
GRE, and IELTS / TOEFL scores if available;
b) A writing sample in English, such as a term paper, thesis, or published paper;
c) A brief statement of research interests (no more than 1-2 sides)
After hearing back from us, and if we recommend that you apply, go to this

online for the ALSS program ($25.00 or $30.00 fee payable by credit card).

Also apply for a Graduate Assistantship and Doctoral Fellowship. These forms

If you are looking at a January 2012 start, you should have all your
qualifications in place now (i.e. previous degree, GRE, etc). In that case we
suggest that you submit your application within the next few weeks, and start
the other steps at the same time. 

As funding is limited we cannot guarantee at any particular time that there will
be scholarships available.
