Description:
The Position: The Department of Writing at the University of Central
Arkansas invites applications for a non-tenure-track, visiting assistant
professor position for the 2011-2012 academic year. This position may be
renewed for a second year. Successful candidates will have a strong
commitment to teaching and be able to teach in several sub-fields of
linguistics. Duties include teaching linguistics in the general education
program as well as teaching introductory and upper-division courses in the
linguistics major. Strong candidates will be prepared to teach at least two
of the core courses required for the BA in Linguistics. This core includes
semantics, sociolinguistics, phonology, and morpho-syntax. The successful

based on interest, background, and need. These include courses in
grammatical structures, linguistics for educators, historical linguistics,

Minimum Qualifications: Evidence of teaching excellence in linguistics at
the undergraduate level and a PhD in linguistics or closely related field;
ABD will also be strongly considered.
The Department of Writing: The department is host to the only degree
program in linguistics in the state. It is housed in one of the newest
buildings on campus and maintains relatively small class sizes. The
department is multi-faceted, offering degrees in general writing and
creative writing in addition to linguistics, and is fully engaged with the
wider community, including hosting an award-winning student-run literary
magazine and an acclaimed international literary journal.
The University: UCA, founded in 1907, enrolls around 11,500 students and
has programs leading to undergraduate degrees in 66 areas of study,
master's degrees in 25, and doctoral degrees. The student body consistently
scores above the national average on the ACT exam. UCA is proud of its
tradition of teaching excellence and has increased its contributions in
scholarly and creative activities. Faculty members are achieving regional
and national recognition with nearly 90 percent of the tenured and
tenure-track faculty holding terminal degrees representing more than 100
institutions. UCA continues to commit substantial funding to new
construction and campus improvements. The campus is widely acclaimed for
its beauty and convenience. UCA has the second largest library in the state
and the first to be fully automated with CD technology. The UCA
Foundation's endowment and UCA's sponsored programs continue to increase.
More information may be found at the UCA website http://www.uca.edu/cfac.
The Community: UCA is located in Conway, a progressive and growing city of
almost 60,000, home of two private colleges, a public school system ranked
among the state's best and a strong K-12 parochial school, and lies within
30 minutes of Little Rock and 40 miles of the Ouachita and Ozark National
Forests. Residents have easy access to a variety of fine and performing
arts, handicraft and folk culture, and pristine wild areas such as the
Buffalo National River. Real estate is moderately priced and taxes are
relatively low.
Application: Review of applications begins immediately and will continue
until filled. Electronic submission of materials is encouraged. Candidates
should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for
four references.
