Ernst Cassirer und Benedetto Croce - Zeitgenossen, idealistisch geprägte 
Philosophen, strenge Kritiker des Positivismus - führten jahrelang einen mehr 
oder weniger offenen, meist kritischen Dialog. Das vorliegende Buch ist die 
erste Monographie zum Verhältnis zwischen den beiden Denkern, die sich in der 
ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts der menschlichen Kultur und Geschichte und 
der Sprache als ,Aktivität des Geistes' widmeten. Die vergleichende Darstellung 
der beiden Philosophen bietet einen gründlichen Einblick in ihre Theorien und in 
das Profil der Zeit sowie eine kritische Rekonstruktion eines wichtigen 
Abschnitts der romanischen und der deutschen Sprachwissenschaft. 
Gleichzeitig behandelt die Arbeit wichtige allgemeine sprachtheoretische 
Probleme, die relevant für die aktuelle Diskussion sind: die Frage des 
kommunikativ-kognitiven Wesens der Sprache und ihrer Stellung in der
