Linguistic Field(s): Discourse Analysis; Semantics; Syntax
Meeting Description:
This meeting focuses on how the temporal structure of discourse is built out of linguistic and world knowledge cues, a topic of intense research for the past couple of decades. How do grammatical elements or systems-- such as tense, aspect, Aktionsart, auxiliary verbs, lexical predicates (like 'last' or 'date back to'), time adjuncts, and discourse connectives-- interact to determine temporal information processing in natural languages? How does world knowledge-- in combination with the above-mentioned grammatical elements or systems-- affect the semantic interpretation? Furthermore, how does mood/modality interact with temporal information (e.g. in factual, counterfactual or hypothetical structures)? Both language-specific and contrastive studies focusing on these different types of interactions-- at the sentence or at the discourse level-- are welcome.
