PhD studentships in Comparative Syntax - University of Cambridge

Applications are invited for 5 PhD studentships covering the period 1
October 2011 to 30 September 2014, working under the general supervision of
Prof. Ian Roberts in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages (although
each student will in fact be assigned a 4-member PhD committee). This award
has become available as a result of an ERC Advanced Grant, "Rethinking
Comparative Syntax". Successful applicants are expected to begin PhD study
on 1 October 2011 and will receive a student stipend sufficient to meet the
fees and maintenance requirements.  

Qualification requirements 
Candidates should hold or be in the process of obtaining a Master's degree
(or equivalent) in Linguistics, with a specialisation in Syntax, and have
attained or expect to attain a mark of distinction. Demonstrable interest
in one or more specific topics in comparative syntactic research over and
above what is set out in the individual research proposal, and/or a good
knowledge of some language(s) other than English, as well as excellent
writing skills in English, are desirable. Eligible candidates must submit
an advanced proposal of research (not exceeding 1000 words) relevant to the
"Rethinking Comparative Syntax" project. In particular, in relation to that
project, they should indicate which of its 5 main empirical areas of
research they would prefer to carry out doctoral work on. The project

When sending the application to the Faculty and to the Board of Graduate
Studies, it is important that applicants mark the envelope and top right
corner of the application form "ERC" and indicate on the application form
that the start date is 1 October 2011. In the Research Statement,
candidates should outline their original research proposal and explain how
it will fit the Project, "Rethinking Comparative Syntax" (see project
proposal at http://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/jobs/RA_ling_proposal.pdf). This
proposal should not exceed 1000 words. Applicants should specify Prof. Ian
Roberts as supervisor on their application forms and are encouraged to
contact Prof. Roberts (igr20 at cam.ac.uk) to discuss the ERC project,
Cambridge College selection, and their applications.  Applicants should
also email the MML Graduate Office (mml-graduate-studies at lists.cam.ac.uk),
indicating that they have sent an application to the Faculty to be
