Dissertation Abstract:
The dissertation describes the Parliamentary history of the most important
regional languages in France (Occitan, Basque, Breton, Dutch, and
Alsatian). It also offers an extensive discussion on the politicians,
parties, and lobbies that, from 1900 to 1951, concerned themselves with
this theme.
Among the key-points at the centre of the analyses, it has to be mentioned:
the 'Pétition pour les langues provonciales' (1870), the parliamentary
debates and legislation during the Third Republic (1900-1939), the regional
language policy during the Second World War (1939-1945), and the come about
of the 'Loi Deixonne' (1951) - France's first regional language legislation.
An extensive use of archival materials allows this study to challenge the
present literature and to offer new conclusions to the ongoing debate. The
new arguments developed through an historical approach are supported by
numerous sources, both published and unpublished.
The dissertation aims to address both students and scholars interested in
Romance studies, the French language, Sociolinguistics, and History.

administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company
operates such a program.
