Arena Romanistica - The Metropolis
In its next issue Arena Romanistica wishes to focus on metropolitan cities.
In this post-industrial era, new economies and altered migration patterns
have transformed the city. To account for this transformation, the notion
of metropolis may help us to rethink the urban as a global, modern and
intercultural phenomenon. How do film, literature and language reflect
these social and cultural changes?
Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- urban identities;
- human relations in the global and post-industrial city;
- space and place;
- encounters between the old and the new, between different cultures and
languages;
- the suburb;
- dialects and sociolects in metropolises;
- representations of the metropolis in film and literature;
- center and periphery, sprawl and concentration;
- aesthetics and semiotics of the urban space.
We welcome contributions from the field of linguistics, literature, film
and cultural studies in both Romance languages and English.
Deadline for submission of papers: 1 June 2011
Stylesheet and submission procedures are available at our website:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company
operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
