Meeting Description:

The workshop investigates contact-induced language change that can be attested on Finnic languages spoken outside of their natural habitat.

In recent years, research into the syntax of Finnic languages has gained increasing international popularity due to the morpho syntactic complexity of these languages. Topics such as spoken language, internal language change, language and identity have been investigated (for Estonian see e.g. Raag 2001 and Ehala 2006; for Finnish e.g. Jaakkola 1999, Jääskeläinen 2002). The majority of studies so far focus on the Finnic languages spoken in their natural habitat. However, a novel strand of research has risen within the past five years - the study of Finnic languages in exicle, i.e. outside of their countries of origin (e.g. the recent collective volume by Praakli and Viikberg 2010 for Estonian; and Frick 2003 and Kovács 2004 for Finnish) that creates awareness of the vitality of Finnic abroad. Due to more extensive mobility worldwide, exile communities of Finnic speakers are becoming more numerous than ever and the language used in such communities gets inputs from both the surrounding majority languages through language contact and also undergoes language internal change due to speaker parameter change.  The main aims of the workshop are as follows: 

1) To map any syntactic parameter changes that have occurred in the exile varieties of Finnic, and compare them to the rules of standard Finnic spoken in their natural habitats. We aim to probe whether it is possible to propose generalisations of the direction of syntactic change that are applicable to the whole language group rather than individual languages
2) To investigate, whether contact with different language families induces different phenomena of language change (e.g. contact with Germanic as opposed to contact with Slavic)
3) To investigate, whether the attested instances of syntactic variation fit in with the typological trends and the grammaticalisation debate (simplification of constructions, morphological erosion etc). 

Call for Papers:

The workshop is of empirical in nature and welcomes contributions from different frameworks that present novel data. Researchers are also encouraged to submit work in progress for a poster presentation.

Please send your abstract to Finnic2011 /at/ hotmail.co.uk no later than April 18, 2011. The length of abstracts should not exceed 500 words (excluding data and references). Letters of acceptance will be sent by May 18, 2011. The abstracts themselves must be anonymous, but the body of the message should include the following information:

Whether the paper is meant as a section paper or a poster
