Meeting Description:

The Centre for Academic Estonian in cooperation with Institute of Estonian Language and Culture at Tallinn University are organising an international conference 'National languages in academic research and higher education' (NatAcLang),  August 29-30th, 2011. The conference is supported by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research.

The European Union promotes multilingualism and cultural diversity. However, English has become a predominant language in scientific research, and internationalisation of higher education is often reduced to using more and more English as instruction language at universities.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the state of national languages in the globalising world of science, dealing with every kind of achievements and problems of using national languages in academia. The scope of the conference themes is not limited. Topics may include developments both in language policies for academic research and higher education in different countries, as well as the influence across national languages on each other's vocabulary, terminology and grammatical structure, incl. English impact on the structure of other national languages.

We welcome discussion on contemporary tendencies of using diverse languages for academic research and higher education, and on different solutions how to reach sustainable balance between national and international scientific production and communication. We also welcome every kind of study of English impact on the structure and vocabulary of other national languages, and vice versa. 

The working languages of the conference will be Estonian and English (interpretation will be available). 

Call for Papers:

We cordially invite contributions on topics that include, but are not limited to:

- Language policies for academic research and higher education in different countries
- Vocabulary, terminology and grammatical structure of scientific and higher education texts in diverse national languages
- English impact on other national languages used in academia.

Please submit your abstract for a 20 min paper (+ discussion) or poster proposal not later than 25.4.2011 in either .doc or .pdf format to e-mail abstract_nataclang at tlu.ee The abstract should not exceed 2500 characters (excl. references).
