Meeting Description:

On June 18-19, 2011, the University of Victoria will host the Workshop on Syntax of Relative Clauses. This is the seventh in an annual series of SSHRC-funded workshops featuring linguists from across Canada with a shared research interest in the grammatical structure and interpretation of noun phrases.

Relative clauses raise a variety of issues for syntactic theory. The papers in this workshop will centre on three main empirical issues:

I. What is the internal structure of relative clauses?
II. What is the nature of syntactic operations within relative clauses?
III. What is the external distribution of relative clauses?

The workshop will feature research by the following invited speakers (talk titles are preliminary):

Elizabeth Ritter (University of Calgary): Relative Clauses in Blackfoot
Leslie Saxon (University of Victoria): Relative Clauses Inside and Out: A Study of T??ch?
Andrea Wilhelm (University of Victoria): Relative Clauses in Dëne S??iné

In addition to the invited presentations, we welcome abstract submissions. Students are particularly encouraged to participate. Talks will be 20 minutes long, plus a 10-minute question period. Depending on the response to this call for abstracts, we may also hold a poster session.
