Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship on second language acquisition of
English grammar, at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at
Cambridge University. The scholarship is sponsored by Education First, a world
leading educational organisation in language learning, as part of the research
program of the Education First Research Unit at the University of Cambridge. The
Education First Research Unit, launched in February 2010, promotes research in
second language learning of English and innovation in language teaching through a
systematic cross-fertilisation between linguistic research and teaching techniques
and curricula.

Research Topic: The primary objective of current research within the EF-research
unit is to provide learner profiles that can shed light on English L2 development,
through the identification of criterial features that can characterise development
across learning stages. One of our core projects involves building the EF-
Cambridge learner corpus, an electronic database compiled out of speech and
written production data of the 300,000 students on EF courses worldwide,
submitted to Englishtown, the EF e-learning platform.

The PhD student will be expected to work closely with the members of the corpus
team and develop a research project that will map out the development of L2
grammars focusing on a research question relating to one of the following topics:

1. What is the effect of mother tongue on learner grammars?
2. What differentiates adult learners from children L2 learners of English?
3. What is the role of input?
4. What are the developmental limits of second language learning?
5. What kinds of theoretical models can explain the interaction of the different
constraints on L2 learning?

The scholarship covers university fees, College fees, and maintenance as set out
at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/costs/costs.html.

The successful candidate should have a degree in (applied) linguistics or a related
discipline and be prepared to work with the EF-Cambridge corpus.

The closing date for this application is Monday 6th of June 2011. For further
details visit http://www.rceal.cam.ac.uk/Research/EF/people.html
