Meeting Description:

The semantics of degree is one of the core topics of formal semantics. The goal of this workshop is to shed light on this topic by inviting contributions focusing on one of the many interfaces with the semantics of gradability and degree. We invite submissions for presentations for a one-day workshop on degree semantics and its interfaces, organised as a satellite event to Sinn und Bedeutung 16 at Utrecht University. The workshop will take place on September 5, 2011, right before Sinn und Bedeutung. 

Final Call for Papers: 

Topics include but are not limited to: 

- Syntactic aspects of degree constructions and their relation to meaning (e.g. the syntax of comparison, the distribution of degree modifiers) 
- Degree and discourse (e.g. degree anaphora, rhetorical aspects of intensification) 
- Pragmatics of degrees (e.g. exclamation and speech act theory, expressiveness in degree constructions, pragmatic constraints on degree, the role of context-dependence) 
- Interface of degree semantics and intonation, in particular the relation between intonation and degree intensification 
- Syntactico-semantic generalisations of cross-linguistic variation in the domain of degree, especially the study of degree-related phenomena in understudied languages
