Guidelines for Abstract Submission:
Abstracts should be single-spaced, use a 12-point font, and employ italics rather than underlining (except for URL addresses).
Papers:
Papers are 15-20 minute lecture-style presentations followed by 10 minutes for questions/responses. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words, including no more than 2-3 key references if desired.
Colloquia/workshops/panel discussions/roundtables/other formats:
Colloquia/workshops/panel discussions/roundtables and other formats (for example, World Café) provide various opportunities for presentations, interaction and discussion (including with the audience) around a theme or topic. You may organise your timeslot and participants as you see fit but you should include adequate time for audience participation:
Short - 1½ hour timeslot.
Long - 3 hour timeslot.
Your abstract should be no longer than 300 words, including approximately 100 words outlining how the session will be organised. You may include no more than 3-4 key references if desired.
Posters:
Posters consist of a display of material on (no more than) one A0-sheet poster. Posters will be displayed at designated times throughout the conference with scheduled opportunities for the presenters to discuss the material with interested individuals.
Your abstract should be no more than 250 words, including no more than 2-3 key references if desired.
Assessment of Abstracts:
Abstracts will be blind-reviewed by at least two independent experts selected by strand convenors. Reviewers will be asked to assess abstracts using the following criteria:
1. Does the abstract provide evidence of a clear line of argument and/or a clear and specific focus for the proposed session?
2. Does the abstract situate its problem/issue in a wider context (theoretical and/or empirical and/or practical) including relevant literature, and does it indicate how this problem is significant for Applied Linguistic enquiry?
3. Does the abstract make clear how the analysis in the session is/will be grounded (theoretically, empirically or practically or some combination of these)?
4. If the session is to be focussed on research, does the abstract include a brief but revealing description of the research methodology?
5. Does the proposed session appear to be feasible in the time allowed?
6. Is the abstract clear and well written?
7. Does the abstract relate to the overall conference theme?
Submissions may be rejected if they do not conform to these guidelines.
Conditions for Acceptance in the Conference Program:
In order for presentations to be included in the program, at least one presenter of a paper or poster must register for the conference. For other types of session, the majority of presenters/contributors must register. To register for the conference, go to http://law.anu.edu.au/coast/events/langfest/conference.htm and click on the link to 'Registration' - this link will become active shortly.
Each presenter/contributor may be listed as a participant in a maximum of two sessions of any kind.

To submit an abstract, go to http://law.anu.edu.au/coast/events/langfest/alaa_alanz.htm and click on 'Submit Abstracts'.
Please note the final date for submission of abstracts has been extended until Friday 17th June 2011.
Notification of the acceptance/rejection of abstracts will be made by Friday 5 August 2011.
Additional Information:
The conference is being planned in association with the annual conference of the Australian Linguistic Society (ALS) (2-4 December 2011) with a joint ALAA-ALANZ-ALS day on Friday 2 December. The first two days of the ALAA-ALANZ conference (30 November and 1 December) will be located at the University of Canberra; the joint ALAA-ALANZ-ALS day (2 December) will be located at the Australian National University. It will provide opportunities for graduate students to discuss work in progress with distinguished academics, including the plenary speakers.
Note: the Workshop will not be a separate mini-conference for graduate students, who, if they wish to present a paper or another activity, should submit proposals to the conference as below.
