University or Organization: University of Potsdam
Department: SFB 632 (Research Centre): Information Structure
Job Location: Potsdam, Germany
Web Address: http://www.sfb632.uni-potsdam.de/index_en.html
Job Rank: PhD position

Specialty Areas: Phonology; Information Structure

Description:

We are seeking a part-time researcher (fixed-term till 06/2015) to work on
"Prosodic focus marking in language contact". This DFG-funded project is
supervised by the Principal Investigators Prof. Dr. Sabine Zerbian and
Prof. Dr. Christoph Schroeder and is part of the Collaborative Research
Centre 632: Information Structure (Sonderforschungsbereich 632:
Informationsstruktur).

The candidate should have a master's degree (or equivalent) in Linguistics
and a strong interest in research. A background in phonology/phonetics and
experimental methods is a prerequisite. Knowledge of information structure
and language contact/second language acquisition is desirable. The project
compares language contact in Germany (German-Turkish) and South Africa
(Zulu/Sotho-SAE). For the present post, acquaintance with the language
situation in South Africa and a background in Bantu languages would be
advantageous. The work requires research travels to South Africa for data
collection.

The candidate should further have good time management, organisational and
communication skills, be proficient in English, and be committed to
contributing to the goals of the overall project.

Candidates are expected to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of
Potsdam within the integrated Graduate School of the research centre. The
topic of the thesis should be related to the grant. Applicants interested
in pursuing a PhD within the frame of the projects' research questions
(experimental approaches to phonology and phonetics of language
contact/second language acquisition) are therefore especially encouraged to
apply.

The salary and social benefits are determined by the German pay scale for
state employees (Entgeltgruppe: 13 TV-Laender, Tarifgebiet Ost). The
University of Potsdam is an equal opportunity employer.

Interested candidates are invited to send their applications, including a
CV with the names and contact details of two referees and [links to] sample
publications, preferably by email.
