Description:
Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Anticipated Faculty Position in Forensic Linguistics
Hofstra University is seeking to fill an anticipated tenure-track position at the
Assistant Professor level in Linguistics with a specialty in Forensic
Linguistics.
Hofstra's graduate program in "Linguistics: Forensic Linguistics" is unique in
the Americas. Its aim is to instruct students in the science of linguistics, and
train them in practical applications of linguistic theory and research to
analytical problems, specifically in the legal arena. In addition to teaching
some of the core linguistic tools of phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, sociolinguistics, dialectology and discourse analysis, the program
includes specific training in the practical application of these tools to legal
investigations, trials, analysis of contracts, statutes, etc. Thus, the program
teaches linguistics, and as much as possible, the language data used for
instruction are forensic. The program, currently offering the M.A., prepares
students to continue on for a Ph.D. in theoretical or applied linguistics or a
related field; or for public and private sector employment in the United States
and internationally in careers relating to or associated with law, law
enforcement, and the forensic sciences.
Candidates should have the Ph.D. in hand, and a strong record
demonstrating:
- Excellence in research, teaching, and overseeing research at the
undergraduate and graduate levels
- Publications and presentations that demonstrate mastery of theoretical
linguistics, especially sociolinguistics and other sub disciplines appropriate to
forensic linguistics case work
- The ability to effectively apply current linguistic theory, research, and
methods to real-world legal cases, as demonstrated by extensive forensic
linguistic case experience, ideally in both civil and criminal courts, for either
the prosecution or the defense
The successful candidate will, further, be expected to participate in the
research projects of the Hofstra University Institute for Forensic Linguistics,
Threat Assessment and Strategic Analysis, which largely focus on corpus
construction, threat assessment and law enforcement and therefore training,
experience and publications in corpus linguistics is desirable, as would be
training in forensics.
Hofstra University is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering
diversity in its faculty, administrative staff and student body, and encourages
applications from the entire spectrum of a diverse community.
Please send applications, by postal mail and email (pdf attachments) to the
application address and email address below, to be received by December 2,
2011. Include your CV, at least one publication, and the names of three
references, with their contact information.
