Description:

The European branch of Xerox global research, Xerox Research Centre 
Europe (XRCE) set in the heart of the French Alps near Grenoble has an 
open position for a Research Area Manager in Natural Language Processing.

As manager of a research area, the candidate will define research directions 
in the field and drive a team of experienced researchers. The candidate will 
contribute to XRCE excellence as a leading research organisation at Xerox 
and will work in close collaboration with the other areas of XRCE as well as 
the other Xerox research centres at the USA and in India; Xerox Palo Alto 
Research Center (PARC), Xerox Research Center Webster, NY (XRCW) and 
in Bangalore, India (XRCI).

Roles and responsibilities include:
-  Definition and leadership of the research agenda for the area which projects 
a 3-5 year vision of scientific directions, identifies the major scientific 
challenges to be addressed and describes the associated approaches, value 
of the research results targeted and the relevance to the business.
-  Managing a team of researchers (includes day to day guidance and 
support, definition and assessment of yearly objectives, regular reviews with 
the team and with management, etc)
-  Representative of the research area in customer and senior management 
visits and scientific communities including academic, industrial, EU, etc
-  Be an interface with Business Groups, understanding the challenges in 
terms of research, and defining projects to address those challenges
-  Lead the team for the definition and execution of projects to be delivered to 
European Union and/or French research/industry ministry
-  Empower and mentor project leaders and researchers

As Area Manager you will report to the lab manager and be a member of the 
centre leadership team.

Directions for research agenda (to be discussed with the candidate):

Building upon the team expertise and leading edge unique technologies, the 
challenges to address consist of strengthening our NLP capabilities with 
extensions in two scientific directions:
-  Knowledge representation and inference, to generate new critical 
information enabling actions
-  Hybrid methods mixing symbolic and statistical approaches

Required Experience and /qualifications:
-  Ph.D. in a relevant field, or equivalent
-  At least 10 years of experience in research, with strong connections in the 
research community and with industry
-  Strong skills and experience in project management, involving 
multidisciplinary teams
-  Significant experience in managing people
-  Proven capability in communicating with senior management
-  Team player
-  Fully fluent in English, another language is a plus

Starting date: November 2011
Duration: Permanent position
