Meeting Description:

The 11th ESSE (European Society for the Study of English) Conference will take place at Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, from 4 to 8 September 2012. Further information about the conference is available from the conference website, http://www.esse2012.org.

Modern language teaching increasingly involves an interactive environment as students communicate with people from all over the world. In this process, technology facilitates communication and is likely to make the learning process more effective. There is great potential in what we will be referring to a 'Technology Implementation in Language Teaching' (TILT) when it comes to promoting authentic communication, stimulating interpersonal and group skills, and generating positive interdependency while still valuing individual contributions. By putting new technologies - not only personal computers, but also smartphones, tablets, etc.- to good use in the language classroom, it is possible to improve student participation and promote autonomous learning, especially if these are clearly stated as learning objectives. We invite papers which present recent developments in TILT in tertiary education, relating to areas such as teaching methods, materials development, the application of corpus tools in the classroom, and continuing professional development in second language teaching.

Boğaziçi University has long been recognized as one of Turkey's best universities. For about 150 years we have sent forth alumni who carry BU's spirit with them as they pursue their lives and careers in many different countries. This conference promises to advance BU's international presence and bring together members of national associations across Europe. Academic scholars as well as students from all over Europe will present and discuss topics in English Studies through more than a hundred seminars, roundtables and poster sessions. We also have a great line-up of keynote speakers including Prof. Linda Hutcheon and Prof. Jonathan Culpeper. As in our previous conferences, you can expect the opportunities to see old friends, meet new ones, and network with a diversity of colleagues from a variety of institutions.

Istanbul, the host city of the 11th ESSE Conference, was an ancient capital and has a history of over 2500 years. A bridge between the East and the West for centuries, Istanbul is located on the Bosporus Strait, where you'll find a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture along with excellent shopping opportunities. It is amazing that Istanbul still manifests both ancient and modern aspects. Highlights of Istanbul include Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, The Blue Mosque whose architecture represents the spiritual backbone of Oriental culture; natural landscapes with seasonal changes, traditional arts, crafts, Turkish cuisine and Istanbul night life. It is my sincere hope that during your time in Istanbul you will enjoy these and other elements that embody the essence of Turkish culture.

Call for Papers:

We invite proposals for Seminar 37, Technology Implementation in Second Language Teaching, to be held at ESSE 2012.

Procedure for Submitting Paper Proposals:

Colleagues wishing to participate in the seminar are invited to submit a 200-word abstract directly to the convenors by 31 January 2012. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 29 February 2012. There will be a maximum of five papers in each two-hour seminar session, to allow for plenty of time for discussion. Each presentation will be given a 15-minute slot.
