University or Organization: University of Hong Kong
Department: School of English
Job Location: Hong Kong
Web Address: http://hku.hk/english/
Job Rank: PhD

Specialty Areas: Asian Englishes

Required Language(s): New English

Description:

Applications are invited for a full-time 3-year PhD position in World/New
Englishes, specifically in Asian Englishes. This position is situated within the
project 'The ecology and evolution of Asian Englishes', funded by the
Research Grant Council's General Research Fund (GRF). In general, the
Asian Englishes project aims to provide an comprehensive understanding
of the linguistic features of varieties of English in Asia, focussing on
postcolonial multilingual ecologies such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Sri
Lanka, and relying on two complementary investigative thrusts: (i) a
consideration of sociohistorical aspects, in particular demography and
language policies during different eras, from the (pre-)colonial period
through post-independence and into the new millennium; and (ii) a close
examination of the linguistic features of the (local) languages that have
come into contact with English as it has evolved.

The PhD student will work on one variety of Asian English, ideally either
Hong Kong English (HKE) or Sri Lankan English (SLE) (though other
Asian Englishes may be proposed and will be considered). While the PhD
dissertation will be an independent discrete topic (e.g. on certain linguistic
feature(s) of HKE or SLE), it will in general be situated in the spirit of the
larger Asian Englishes project and will preferably involve (i) sociohistorical
investigation, including immigration patterns, language policy, etc, and (ii)
structural analysis, with an eye on contact dynamics, potentially involving
the collection of data of contemporary HKE or SLE, and will contribute to
and be an integral part of the larger Asian Englishes project. The specifics
of the project will vary depending on the variety of English being worked on.
The position is available for 36 months, starting March 2012 or as soon as
possible thereafter.

Candidates should have background in linguistics and preferably familiarity
with World/New/Asian Englishes. Previous fieldwork experience is
desireable but not a prerequisite.

Applications have to be via the standard application process for HKU, and
must be made online. For all information on research postgraduate
degrees, application, and financial assistance, see
http://www0.hku.hk/gradsch/web/apply/index_ps.htm.

Full-time PhD students who hold a first degree with second-class honours
first division (or equivalent) or above are normally considered eligible to
receive a Postgraduate Studentship during the normative study period.
Candidates' results in Master's degrees may also be considered. The basic
level of studentship is HK$13,600 (US$1,740) per month for the 2011-2012
academic year (w.e.f. September 1, 2011) (subject to revision). Candidates
may also apply for other financial awards. The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship
(HKPF) provides each awardee with a monthly studentship of HK$20,000
and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 per
year for a period up to three years. The deadline for application is 1
December 2011, HKT 12 noon. Applicants who have applied for the HKPF
will be automatically considered for the award of University Postgraduate
Fellowships (UPF) of HK$70,000, on top of the Postgraduate
Studentships. Information on awards and financial assistance may be
found at http://www0.hku.hk/gradsch/web/apply/guide1213/4.html
