Department: Department of Foreign Languages and Translation
Job Location: Kristiansand, Norway
Web Address: http://www.uia.no
Job Rank: Full Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The University of Agder invites applications for one full-time permanent
position as Professor in English Linguistics at the University of Agder
(Kristiansand campus) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education,
Department of Foreign Languages and Translation.

The appointee may be assigned teaching and supervision in English
linguistics at all academic levels, including the doctoral level.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Translation is also responsible for
teaching English in the teacher education programme. Applicants' school-
related work as well as experience in continuing and further education will
therefore be considered.

The appointee must be able to participate in work related to teaching,
examinations and administration within relevant subject areas and according
to existing regulations.

Further, in accordance with his/her description of position and professional
area of expertise, the appointee may also be assigned work outside of the
faculty/department with which the position is associated, for example in
connection with continuing and further education (EVU). Applicants' previous
research activity and participation in professional networks will also be
considered.

The appointee must be able to document linguistic breadth in his/her research
area and teaching experience. Further qualifications within one or more of the
following subject areas are required: linguistic system studies (including
grammar, phonetics or semantics), historical linguistics, sociolinguistics,
language acquisition and English-Norwegian contrastive linguistics. The
appointee must also have a good knowledge of modern linguistic theories.
Active international publication work at a high level is a condition for
employment, and the applicant should also be able to refer to having a well-
developed international network in his/her research field. It is also expected
that the appointee will contribute to bilingual and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Documentation of relevant practical-pedagogical competency based on
educational background, teaching experience and/or academic supervision is
required. Applicants who upon appointment cannot document this basic level
of competency must acquire it within a two-year period, for example by
completing UiA's course in university pedagogics. Pedagogical qualifications
beyond the basic competency level may award a competitive advantage
when ranking professionally/academically competent applicants.

Emphasis will be placed on applicants having acquired broad administrative
experience. It is also desirable for applicants to have a good - oral and
written - knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Should
the applicant not have an adequate skill level in Norwegian or another
Scandinavian language at the time of appointment, he/she must acquire
these skills within a two-year period.

Consideration will be given to applicants' ability to cooperate, take initiative
and work systematically. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews,
and may also be asked to give a trial lecture or other demonstration of their
pedagogical qualifications. With the applicant's permission, UiA will also
conduct a reference check before appointment.
