Description:
The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) and the School of Communication
Sciences and Disorders at the University of Memphis invite applications for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in August 2012. The
position is a 9 month appointment to the IIS with a home in the School of
Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Applicants must have completed (or be completing) a Ph.D. in
communication sciences and disorders, cognitive science, or a related field,
and must have a record of interdisciplinary research. Salary is competitive
and commensurate with qualifications. A successful candidate will be
expected to spearhead new externally funded research initiatives, to build and
lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research, and to teach courses at
the graduate and undergraduate levels.
All candidates with empirical interdisciplinary research related to
communication and/or the identification and treatment of communication
disorders will be considered. General areas of research could be in speech,
language, or hearing sciences, with a variety of possible emphases in
development, modeling, genetics, imaging, engineering or other related
interdisciplinary fields. Specific content areas of interest might include
autism, literacy, speech perception, or dialog and discourse, among others.
Candidates whose research areas strengthen existing areas of IIS
researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Institute for Intelligent Systems consists of 28 faculty members across 9
departments including Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer
Science, Engineering, Education, Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology.
The IIS offers a graduate certificate in Cognitive Science and is affiliated with
BA and MS programs in other departments. The IIS has received over $20
million in external awards in the past four years. Further information about the

The University of Memphis School of Communication Sciences and
Disorders is a highly ranked program nationally, offering graduate degrees in
Speech-Language Pathology (MA), Audiology (AuD), and Communication
Sciences and Disorders (PhD). The School is also the home of the Center for
Research Initiatives and Strategies for the Communicatively Impaired, which
was created under the State of Tennessee's Centers of Excellence program
