Description:

Task:
A post-doc scholar is sought who will conduct a substantive programme of 
research in the greater Himalayan region, an area which may be construed as 
encompassing at least Central, South and Southeast Asia. This research is 
to lead to a Habilitation, to be defended in Bern. In addition to a share of the 
administrative duties in accordance with the prevailing norms, an integral part 
of the Assistenz involves teaching specialised courses in historical 
linguistics and inspiring students. The assistant will be expected to 
collaborate in the development of the Trans-Himalayan Database and 
constructively to participate in the various activities and research initiatives 
of the Linguistics Institute. Moreover, the candidate will be asked to facilitate, 
wherever possible, the research of Prof. Dr. George van Driem and, more 
particularly, of the PhD candidates of the Linguistics Institute working on the 
documentation and analysis of endangered languages in South Asia and 
adjacent regions.

Qualifications:
The candidate should have a PhD in linguistics, in-depth knowledge of 
relevant Asian languages showing one or more areal specialisations. The 
scholar should give evidence of having developed scholarly initiatives of 
international prominence and allure and should demonstrate a sense of 
engagement in the international linguistic community.

We offer:
Salary commensurate with the norms of the canton of Bern in view of an 
assessment of the credentials of the candidate. Moreover, Bern is a beautiful 
world heritage old town offering a high quality of living. The city is close to the 
mountains and ideal for hiking or skiing. The institute offers a stimulating 
international research environment and excellent facilities.

Quota of working hours:  50% - 65%
Starting date:  1 February 2012
Fixed-term employment contract:  3 years (potentially extendable to 6 years)
