Humour, inherently associated with funniness, amusement and laugher, has attracted scholarly interest for centuries. Over the past three decades, humour studies have been developing at full tilt, with innumerable publications being released each year.

The first symposium of LAFAL, held in 2010, was focused on linguistic approaches to different types of humour. Selected papers presented at this conference have recently been published in a peer-reviewed volume: Marta Dynel (ed.). 2011. The Pragmatics of Humour across Discourse Domains. P&BNS vol. 210, John Benjamins.

The second LAFAL symposium is part of the 2012 International Society for Humour Studies Conference, held in Kraków.

The third LAFAL symposium (2013), entitled 'Entertainment Discourse Beyond Humour Studies', is convened to provide a forum for linguists who are interested in concepts and language issues of relevance to humour research but who may prefer to address those without employing the well-entrenched humour theories. The primary objective will be to explore multifarious phenomena which, viewed from a certain angle, appear to be humorous and, thereby, to enhance methodological tools used in humour research across a variety of linguistic disciplines.

Conference Fee:

The registration fee of 180 euros covers a set of conference materials, coffee breaks with refreshments, and a conference dinner (22 March). A guided tour of Lodz for registered participants is also planned for 23 March.

Accommodation and Board:

There are 77 rooms available for participants in the hotel section of the Conference Centre, where LAFAL 3 will take place. The rooms come with free breakfast, private bathroom, satellite TV, radio, telephone, refrigerator and free internet access (via Ethernet cable). The Conference Centre also houses a restaurant and a drink bar. The organisers offer a conference stay package (270 euros) which includes accommodation (3 nights: 20, 21 and 22 March; breakfast included) and board (3 lunches on: 21, 22 and 23 March; and 2 suppers on: 21 and 23 March). 

Call for Papers:

We invite papers addressing all manner of phenomena which may not be widely recognised within humour studies but can indeed be perceived as relevant to entertainment, humour, laugher, or amusement. The papers, not necessarily based on humour theory, should pertain to topics, such as:

- Impoliteness and conflict talk
- Taboo words
- Stylistic figures (metaphor, irony, hyperbole, etc.)
- Creative language use
- Slang

as well as any linguistic notions discussed in the context of the discourse of mass media entertainment, for example:

- TV programmes
- Films and series
- Press
- Advertising
- Popular literature
- The language of the Internet

We also welcome papers concerning the (non)humorous nature of well-recognised manifestations of humour, including:

- Canned jokes
- One-liners and witticisms
- Anecdotes
- Teasing
- Banter
- Wordplay
- Parody 
- Satire
- Non-verbal humour
- Sitcom humour
- Stand-up comedy
- Laughter in discourse

The submissions may refer to any of the infinite range of theoretical frameworks subscribing to various linguistic disciplines, most importantly:

- Pragmatics
- Semantics
- Discourse analysis
- Translation
- Sociolinguistics
- Neurolinguistics
- Psycholinguistics
- Philosophy of language
- Gender language studies
- Media language studies

Abstract Submission:

The conference language is English and each presentation slot is 20 minutes followed by a 10-minute discussion. For each submission, please provide:

- Name, title, affiliation, email address
- Title of paper
- Abstract (200-300 words, not including references)
