Meeting Description:

In Spain, the teaching of language and literature is currently experiencing remarkable changes in all domains (obligatory, post-obligatory, and university education) that emphasize the need to deal with the challenges brought about by this dynamic of innovation. Such need, inevitably and in the first place, leads to reflecting on the identity and epistemological statute of our area of knowledge, a young area in its way to consolidation, yet with a long way to go to spread its object and methods, as is the case in all specific didactics.

Thus, on one hand, recent education curricula regulations, that emphasize the basic competences and specifically the communicative competence, demand materials, methodological proposals, evaluation criteria and tools that allow for innovation in the teaching of language and literature beyond the gramaticalism and historicism that have traditionally -and currently do- hinder them.

The field of Language and Literature Didactics should answer such demands. In turn, such demands necessarily have to derive from a rigorous and solid research activity that is undoubtedly taking place at the varying Spanish universities and many educational centers of all levels. Still, it is necessary that research outcomes be shared, jointly discussed, and spread in the scientific and educational community, to be recognized and acknowledged.

On the other hand, and closely related to this last consideration, it is well-known that our area faces difficulties for its research activity to be officially recognized by the varying national and regional evaluation agencies. Such difficulties are mainly due to lack of clarity of the scientific field LLD belongs to -Social Sciences, Humanities- in addition to other factors such as lack of specialized reviewers. Should the panorama continue this way, the repercussions will undoubtedly be very serious for the LLD area since it will mean its weakening in the scientific and university domain.

Given this state of affairs, the area should react and spread its research so that it reaches the new regulations of the programs for teaching language and literature in primary and secondary education, and at university level.

It is the concern that arises from the previous discussion that motivates the monographic theme of this conference and the conception of this event as a necessary forum of debate, joint discussion, decision-making, research communication, and acknowledgement.

Aims:

- To show and share information on current research lines in the field. 
- To specify priority axes for research in Language and Literature Didactics. 
- To act as a forum to establish contacts that will allow setting out national and international lines and projects. 
- To claim and promote acknowledgement of the research activity in our area of knowledge.
