Dissertation Abstract:

This cognitive study of term variation (synonymy) is based on the initial
hypothesis that the projection of a concept through different meanings in a text
is not random, but rather motivated by various factors belonging to the
cognitive realm. This hypothesis is examined by observing the lexicalisation of
concepts in a bilingual French and Galician corpus of texts belonging to the
domain of fishing, focusing on the conceptual information displayed by term
variants. This thesis begins by exploring the role concept classes play in the
salience of some conceptual facets, and continues by observing the conceptual
and naming differences between French and Galician and considering the extent to
which they reflect different culturally-bound perspectives. Finally, the study
examines the influence of the cognitive context in which naming takes place,
exploring term variation in relation to the text sender's subject field and the
point of view reflected on the textual sequence.
