Job Location: California, USA
Web Address: http://careers.unitedhealthgroup.com
Job Rank: Researcher
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; NLP
Description:
Job Number: 371356
Position:
The Research Linguist II will work closely with other medical language
linguists, NLP Engineers and Clinical Coding Analysts to develop state-of-
the-art medical NLP. The Research Linguist II must develop a thorough
understanding of all clinical coding applications of LifeCode technology, and
be able to apply this knowledge to other types of medical information
extraction. Responsibilities will include maintaining and developing domain-
specific lexical databases and rules related to multiple coding or information
extraction areas, and will also include assessing the application of our
software to other disciplines or information extraction projects. This person
will apply various techniques from computational linguistics to develop and
improve software modules that perform morphological analysis, tokenization,
parsing, and semantic analysis. Linguistic design work on particular areas of
semantic or grammatical disambiguation will be required, with constant
attention to implementation and a rapid development cycle. The successful
candidate will be capable of leading specific NLP development projects as
needed, and of mentoring more junior research linguists. The Research
Linguist II reports to the Manager of NLP Development.
Primary Responsibilities:
Acquire a thorough knowledge of the main linguistic modules of the LifeCode
system, including an understanding of vector matching, the function and
editing of lexical analyzers, the role of general purpose lexical analyzers, and
document segmentation.
Assist in the design, development, maintenance, documentation, and testing
of one or more aspects of coding or information extraction. This may include
different coding areas, such as ICD, CPT or EM coding, and/or various types
of medical documentation, such as emergency medicine, radiology, or
orthopedics.
Provide leadership in product development both within and across
departments. This will require generating comparisons to customer changes,
statistical analysis of various aspects of the system, eliciting ideas from
medical coders and other linguists, and arriving at creative solutions to
product enhancement.
Participate in planning, design and implementation of extensions of LifeCode
technology into new coding areas (ICD10-CM and PCS) and applications
(CDI, more generalized information extraction and data mining).
Able to function as the technical lead for a project. This will require
coordinating the work of several people to enhance the product as well as
advanced direction to move the product forward on multiple fronts.
Exhibits objectivity and openness to others' views; gives and welcomes
constructive feedback; contributes to building a positive team environment.

keep the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming
year.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax
return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site,
or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a
simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to
LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
