                      English (eng)

Description:

Tasks:

- Carrying out original research in an area of translation studies or in

- Excellent research qualities, as displayed in a PhD degree on a

acquisition (candidates nearing completion of a PhD may also be

record, as measured against relative seniority.

- The ability to teach BA and MA courses within the field of
translation studies, and to design new courses in this area, in close
cooperation with colleagues in the English Department and LUCL.
The Department currently offers both a BA Minor in translation
(English-Dutch and Dutch-English) and an MA programme
Translation in Theory and Practice, which from 2012-13 will be a
specialisation within the new MA Linguistics programme (see
https://studiegids.leidenuniv.nl/studies/show/1523/vertalen-engels-nederlands-engels and
https://studiegids.leidenuniv.nl/studies/show/1552/english-language-and-culture-translation-dutch-english-dutch for further information on
the 2011-12 programmes). The Department particularly welcomes
applicants who can teach advanced and specialised translation (e.g.
medical translation or subtitling) from Dutch to English and English to
Dutch.

- The ability to teach second language acquisition and second
language teaching will be an advantage, as will be experience in any
of the following: writing, applied grammar and vocabulary,
pronunciation courses in the language laboratory, presentation skills
and rhetoric. Further information on BA teaching in the Department in
2011-12 can be found at
https://studiegids.leidenuniv.nl/studies/show/1636/engelse_taal_en_cultuur).

- Administrative abilities, as measured against relative seniority.

- The successful applicant will be a native speaker of Dutch or
English, with a near-native-speaker level of competence in the other
language (equivalent to C2 in the Common European Framework of
Reference). Applicants who do not fulfil these requirements will not
be considered.

On appointment, depending on experience to date, the successful
applicant may be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary
teaching skills certification trajectory (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs).

We offer:

The rank of lecturer (Universitair Docent) corresponds roughly to that
of assistant professor. Salary range: from € 3.195,- to € 4.374,- per
month (salary scale 11), commensurate with qualifications, with
additional holiday and end-of-year bonuses. Candidates from
outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

Applications should be in English, and be submitted to
vacatureslucl at hum.leidenuniv.nl in *one* PDF document named
"Family Name - Given name - 12-090". Including:

- A motivation letter.

- A CV listing education and employment history, publications,
courses taught, grants and awards, etc.

- A statement of teaching philosophy.

- Sample course outlines.

- Teaching evaluations (in a separate document if inclusion in the
PDF is technically cumbersome).

- A research agenda with clear potential for grant applications to
external funding agencies.

- Names, positions and email addresses of three referees (reference
letters should not be included).
