Description:
Applications are invited for a one-year postdoctoral position in speech
perception and spoken word recognition through the College of
Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University. The position is
funded by a 5-year NSF grant aimed at understanding the role of speech
prosody, including pitch, loudness, speech rate and rhythm, to understanding
spoken words. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for oversight
of, and substantial contributions to, collaborative projects between Dr. Laura
Dilley of Michigan State University and Dr. Mark Pitt of Ohio State University.
While residence in and/or relocation to the central Michigan and/or central
Ohio areas is preferred, a combination of telecommuting and on-site meetings
could be arranged for the ideal applicant.
The postdoctoral researcher will be primarily responsible for preparing written
and oral presentations for journal publications and conferences and will also
assist with helping to plan and conduct studies, including speech perception
and production experiments and/or acoustic-phonetic analyses, as well as
oversee undergraduate and graduate students working on related projects.
A requirement for the position is good familiarity with the published literature
on processes in spoken word recognition, including word segmentation and
lexical access. A strong preference will be given to applicants with good
familiarity with the published literature on speech prosody. Applicants should
have a track record of published research commensurate with their
experience in an area closely related to projects aims, such as speech
perception, spoken word recognition, and/or prosody. A Ph.D. degree is
required; preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in hand, but
Ph.D. candidates who can provide evidence of dissertation defense dates on
or before August 11, 2012 will be considered. Relevant Ph.D. areas are
Psychology, Speech & Hearing Science, Linguistics, and/or Cognitive
Science. The successful candidate will have excellent organization and
communication skills and strong personal motivation. Background and
experience with manuscript submission to scholarly journals is desirable, as
is training in acoustic analysis of speech segments and/or prosody, computer
programming, and/or music performance/theory. English language proficiency
required. The salary is $40,000 per year.
