Description:

Several Fee Waiver PhD Positions at University of Huddersfield

The English Subject Area in the School of Music, Humanities and Media,
University of Huddersfield invites applications for several PhD positions. The
extent of fee-waiver will be decided depending on previous academic achievement
and future potential. The posts are open to both international and home applicants.

Successful applicants will be expected to provide up to 80 hours
research/teaching assistance a year for a 100% scholarship and up to 40 hours
for a 50% scholarship. Applicants must be able to fund their own living costs.
Importantly, the successful applicants should have an interest in one or more of
the following areas: 

Linguistic politeness and impoliteness
Intercultural communication
Historical pragmatics
Language on the internet

Successful candidates will work under the supervision of Professor Daniel Z.
Kadar, with Dr. Jim O'Driscoll as a second supervisor, and they will be expected
to spend at least 8 hours per week on specific research assignments given to
them by their supervisors. 

Applicants should be of outstanding academic ability, with at least an upper
second class degree and usually a Masters-level qualification, and a commitment
to develop high quality and original research. A proven interest in linguistic
politeness, impoliteness and rituality is an important asset for the application
and applicants with such an interest will be given priority in the course of the
selection process. Previous research background and expertise in a second
language count as pluses but they are not preconditions for the position. 

The School performed very well in RAE 2008. Across the School more than 75 per
cent of the research was ranked as internationally recognised, internationally
excellent or world-leading. The School has a substantial postgraduate community,
and the successful applicant will be able to participate in a full range of
research activities including seminars, research training and conferences. The
University offers generous funding for conferences and other research-related
activities.

expected to submit 1) an application letter, which describes their previous
experience (if any) and interests related with the areas listed above, as well
as 2) a detailed description of their planned doctoral research, and 3) two
letters of recommendation. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on Skype
or phone, depending on technology available for the applicant.

The closing date for this call is 20 May 2012. The applicant will be expected to
enroll in September 2012.
