Job Location: Merelbeke, Belgium
Web Address: http://www.nuance.com
Job Rank: Senior Research Engineer (NLP)
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics
Description:
At Nuance Communications, everything we do is focused on developing the
most human, natural, intuitive ways to use your voice to take command of
information. Our people and our technology have pioneered the highest
functioning speech software in the world, ceaselessly perfecting the ability for
machines to recognize and emulate the human voice. We design and deliver
technologies that intuitively link man, machine and the global storehouse of
knowledge to help companies and consumers work seamlessly and
intelligently with the world.
Role: Senior Research Engineer (Natural Language Processing)
Location: Merelbeke, Belgium
REF: 7575
Job Description:
Computer Scientist in the Healthcare Research organization working on a
state of the art clinical language understanding system in collaboration with
IBM using SIRE toolkit.
Major duty is to conduct research on applying SIRE technology to Nuance
Healthcare clinical language understanding products, run experiments,
perform error analysis, engage with CLU product development team.
This research will focus on how to leverage available corpora, which is a mix
of some labeled and largely unlabeled data - in a semantic interpretation task,
combining techniques from across different fields such as statistical
classification, information retrieval, stochastic parsing, machine learning and
machine translation.
Some of the research work will be directed towards learning, training models
from large, unlabeled data and some of the work will focus on automatic,
corrective learning based on user feedback.
This research will also include improvements to several components such as
segmenting and document structuring, parts of speech tagging, syntactic
parsing, word sense disambiguation, semantic tagging and interpretation,
normalizing extracted facts to standard code systems with or without
underlying hierarchies and system confidence estimation.
This research will be conducted in the context of building a scalable,
commercializable medical fact extraction system on top of available in-house
resources and technologies - such as Ontologies, parsers, taggers etc There
is also an opportunity to make the system robust to errors in system input,
such those introduced by speech recognition systems while converting
speech to text.
Improvements to this technology will be applied to deep question answering
system (such as Watson for Healthcare).
Skills and Experience Required:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience conducting research in large corpus
based statistical classification, statistical machine translation or information
retrieval techniques is required. Research in graduate school or post-doctoral
position is acceptable.
- In addition to the above techniques, research experience in machine
learning, stochastic parsing, semantic tagging and confidence estimation
techniques is highly desirable.
- Experience in semi-supervised and unsupervised learning methods,
corrective learning from feedback during product use is also highly desirable.
- Programming experience in one or more of these languages is required:
JAVA, C++, PERL, and/or Python.
- Bash/Unix scripting skills are required.
Preferred Skills:
- SQL or other Database knowledge is highly desirable.
- Experience in medical text analytics and/or clinical information retrieval is a
definite PLUS.
