Workshop: New Insights into the Syntax and Semantics of Complementation

This workshop is part of the 21st International Conference on Historical Linguistics (ICHL 21):

The purpose of this workshop is to examine the diachronic origin and change of complementation structures within a language as well as across languages. We would like to discuss how the emergence and change of embedded clause types interact with the development of different clause-embedding predicate classes. Additionally, we would like to pay closer attention to how semantic change of clause-embedding predicates may give rise to or prohibit new complementation types.

Call for Papers:

We aim to bring together researchers working on complementation cycles from a diachronic perspective. In particular, we invite contributions showing to what extent attested changes have affected the present-day complementation systems and how they can be accounted for in various theoretical approaches.

We invite contributions that address the following (and related) topics:

- Possible source constructions and their core properties
- Common properties of complementation and pre-complementation structures
- Distinguishing properties of embedding and pre-embedding structures
- Inventories of clause-embedding predicates: expansion, consistency, reduction
- Main Clause Phenomena and their distribution in diachronic syntax

We invite abstract submissions for 20 minute presentations. Abstracts should be submitted in PDF format. Submissions should be anonymous and not reveal the identity of the author(s) in any form. Abstracts must not exceed one page in A4 (or letter-size) paper, including examples and references, with 2.5 cm (or 1 inch) margins and 11 pt font size.
