The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at East Carolina
University seeks to fill the position of Chair and, while we anticipate that
the appointment will be made at the rank of Professor, well-qualified
Associate Professors who have a distinguished academic and leadership record
will be considered. The qualifications for this appointment, a twelve-month
position that will begin July 1, 2013, include: (a) a Ph.D. in a foreign
language, linguistics, or a closely related discipline from an appropriately
accredited institution; (b) a record of scholarly publications; (c)
demonstrated excellence in teaching and service; (d) evidence of effective
leadership and management skills commensurate with the position; and (e)
administrative experience desirable. In a continuing effort to enrich its
academic environment and provide equal educational and employment
opportunities for all, the Department actively encourages members from all
underrepresented groups in higher education to submit applications. Screening
will begin January 31, 2013 and applications will be accepted until the
position is filled.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has 37 full-time faculty
members. It offers BA and BS teaching degrees in French, German and Hispanic
Studies; multidisciplinary major concentrations in Classics and Russian
Studies; as well as courses of study in Japanese and Italian. The Department
participates in the MA in International Studies, offers a graduate certificate
in Hispanic Studies and is seeking approval for an MA in Hispanic Studies. The
Department offers a collegial and supportive work environment for faculty with
varied research interests, backgrounds, and areas of specialization. Faculty
members have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, research, and
