Six PhD positions in syntax, phonology and language acquisition at CASTL 
(Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics) at the Faculty of 
Humanities, Social Sciences and Education

The University of Tromsø currently has six vacant research fellow positions 
for applicants who want to pursue a PhD degree in theoretical and/or 
experimental linguistics. The successful applicant will propose a research 
project that is compatible with ongoing work at CASTL (see 
http://castl.uit.no) in the areas of syntax, phonology or language acquisition. 
There will be two positions in each of the three subdisciplines (syntax, 
phonology, language acquisition). This distribution may be adjusted in case 
there are not enough suitable candidates in each of the subdisciplines.

The Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) is a 
Norwegian Center of Excellence funded by The Research Council of 
Norway and the University of Tromsø. The academic group at the center 
currently consists of 6 senior researchers, 8 researchers/post-doctoral 
research fellows and 14 PhD students. Several other researchers and PhD 
students with other sources of funding are connected to CASTL as affiliates 
or guest researchers, so that the CASTL community today consists of 
about 50 researchers and PhD students.

CASTL's primary research activity is within generative grammar with a 
focus on syntax, phonology, and language acquisition. CASTL also runs a 
Graduate School. The candidates hired in the advertised research 
fellowships are expected to follow the program of the Graduate School and 
to complete a doctoral dissertation within the four years. A more detailed 
plan for coursework, research, and teaching will be developed by the 
employee together with the Graduate School Coordinator shortly after

The successful applicant will have to document qualifications in theoretical 
and/or experimental linguistics at the Master's level. 

The appointment will include teaching in the Department of Language and 
Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. 
The normal period of appointment is four years. The PhD study is 
standardized to three years. The fourth year consists of teaching or other 
duties for the university, organized according to a distribution formula of 25 
% per year. The university may fund a shorter period of appointment if the 
research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research education, 
or when previous appointments to educational positions (research fellow, 
research assistant or the equivalent) may be considered as part of the 
education. The combined research education must add up to three years in 
total.
