Department: Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Job Location: Sheffield, United Kingdom
Web Address: http://www.shef.ac.uk/jobs
Job Rank: Lecturer

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Faculty of Arts and Humanities
School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics
Lecturer in Medieval/Anglo Saxon English

Grade 8: £37,012 - £44,166 p.a. Potential to progress to £49,689 p.a.
through sustained exceptional contribution. Fixed term for 3 years.

Colleagues in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics
are known for their international-quality research in English Language,
English Literature, Cultures of the British Isles, Applied Linguistics, Theatre
and Performance, and Creative Writing. And much of this activity is passed
onto students through our research-led approach to learning and teaching.
With over 50 members of academic staff, the School of English is able to
offer outstanding teaching across a wide range of subject areas. In recent
years five members of staff have received Senate Awards for Teaching
Excellence, and one of our staff has been awarded a National Teaching
Fellowship. The School is housed in a new Faculty of Arts building which
features modern flexible learning, teaching and research facilities - and a
cafe. The School of English plays an active role in the local community, and
our students are encouraged to venture outside the University to see how
some of the ideas they are learning about can apply in the wider world. We
have excellent links with local schools, libraries and museums, and we
regularly undertake a range of different projects and activities in partnership
with these organisations.

The University of Sheffield has been named UK University of the Year in
the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. We've won this prestigious
award because we're a world-class university in a unique city. We are a
community true to our civic roots and our straightforward approach informs
everything we do, both close to home and around the world. This is an
ideal opportunity for a scholar with an outstanding publication record and
excellent teaching ability to join one of the major centres for English
Language and Linguistics scholarship in the United Kingdom.

The post-holders will design and deliver teaching on the BA in English
Language and Linguistics, the MA in English Language Studies, and the
MA in Culture of the British Isles. They will develop the School's research
profile through the production of high quality publications and through
attracting external research funding. Post-holders will be expected to
contribute to the School's presence within the Faculty of Arts and
Humanities, the wider University and, through outreach and knowledge
exchange, in Sheffield and beyond and to carrying out appropriate
administrative duties to a high standard.

You will have (or be close to completing) a PhD in Medieval/Anglo Saxon
English (or have equivalent experience). You will have proven teaching
ability, and be able to contribute to existing modules in Old English and
History of English at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well
as developing new modules in your research period and specialism. The
ability to link with comparable teaching and research interests in the Faculty
of Arts and Humanities is essential for this position. Evidence of public
engagement activities will also be an advantage.
