Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Call Deadline: 29-Feb-2012

Meeting Description:

The Linguistics Research Centre of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL) and the Department of Portuguese of the University of Macau are inviting submissions for a Workshop on Crosslinguistic Influence in Non-Native Language Acquisition, which will be held at Universidade Nova de Lisboa on 29-30 June 2012.

After several decades of research, the question of whether or not the L1 plays a role in the process of acquisition, and, if so, what that role might be, is still a matter of ongoing debate in the field of Second Language Acquisition. Of particular interest are questions such as (1) is L1 influence restricted to the early stages of acquisition or are its effects pervasive, permeating every stage of development? (2) are the same effects found both in naturalistic and in formal learning contexts? (3) is transfer inevitable or are there certain factors which might (dis)favour it? (4) are different components of the grammar affected differently by crosslinguistic influence? Furthermore, these questions are not restricted to the L1 alone, as much recent research has provided ample evidence of L2 to L3 transfer, and also reverse transfer, in the domains of bilingual and multilingual acquisition.

Invited Speakers:

Rafael Salaberry (University of Texas-Austin)
Silvina Montrul (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Worshop Organisers:

Ana Madeira (Universidade Nova de Lisboa)
Custódio Martins (Universidade de Macau)
Maria Francisca Xavier (Universidade Nova de Lisboa)

2nd Call for Papers:

Submissions are invited for papers focussing on these and other related topics. We would also welcome proposals discussing the implications of research on crosslinguistic influence for the design of language teaching strategies and materials.

Abstract Submission:

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute talks, plus 10 minutes for discussion. The workshop language is English. Authors are asked to send abstracts by email, as Word attachments, to wcil2 at fcsh.unl.pt. The abstract should include the title, but not the author's name(s), and should be no longer than two pages in length, including examples and references, with 2.5 cm margins, in 12-point Times, single-spaced. The title of the paper, name of the author(s), affiliation(s), postal address and e-mail address should be included in the e-mail message.

Abstracts should arrive no later than 29 February 2012. Speakers will be notified of the results of their abstract review by 15 April 2012.
