Description:
Lecturer in the Social Psychology of Language and Communication
We wish to appoint a Lecturer in the Social Psychology of Language and
Communication who will join our newly established Centre for Social and
Cognitive Research in the Public Interest (SCORPIO). This Centre has a
core complement of 12 members of academic staff, including social,
forensic and cognitive psychologists. All members of the Centre conduct
theoretically informed research that addresses societal concerns in areas
such as criminal justice, skill acquisition, behavioural economics,
collaborative decision-making, educational enhancement and social
inclusion. The Centre is keen to appoint an individual who will strengthen
research in one or more of its current research units:
- The Social Interaction & Social Cognition Unit
- The Knowledge & Skills Unit
- The Investigative Expertise Unit
You should be an excellent researcher with a proven track record of high-
quality publications and evidence of engagement with securing external
research funding. You will join a strong academic team and will play an
important role in addressing Lancaster's ambition to retain its position as a
top 10 UK university and to achieve its goal of becoming one of the
world's top 100 institutions. Working to enhance Lancaster's distinctive
ethos of innovative thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration, you will
contribute excellent research and teaching to strengthen the reputation of
the SCORPIO Centre and the Psychology Department.
The SCORPIO Centre is well resourced, with excellent testing facilities
including eye-tracking equipment, 3D movement registration systems and
audio-visual recording laboratories. The Centre is also developing a state-
of-the-art interviewing facility. The Centre has strong links with a range of
regional and national agencies, especially in relation to security, law
enforcement, criminal justice and education. Members of the Centre also
work closely with other departments within the University, including
Computing & Communications, Linguistics, Economics, Educational
Research, Law and Management Science. The SCORPIO Centre
additionally has strong collaborative links with other regional, national and
international universities.
The quality of the Department's international research is mirrored by the
quality of its teaching (e.g., The Telegraph currently features Lancaster as
a top-10 UK undergraduate psychology course). The Department's
postgraduate provision is thriving and includes ESRC-recognised PhD
and Masters programmes. The Department's undergraduate community is
likewise extremely buoyant. We offer a supportive and collegiate
environment, with moderate and carefully managed teaching and
administration loads.
