The study of how morphophonological exponents are connected to morphosyntactic features lies at the heart of the study of the interface between syntax and the lexicon. It raises questions about phonological representations, the proper way to codify information in the lexicon and the ways in which different lexical entries are related to each other, among many other topics that have received a great deal of attention in the last 20 years. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers that have approached these questions from a variety of theoretical perspectives, attending to their phonological, syntactic and morphological aspects.
There are two main issues that will be addressed:
- Conditions on the selection of morphological exponents: How do exponents compete with each other to spell out sets of features? What factors can influence in this competition and what kinds of selection are attested in the languages of the world? How local do the items that impose restrictions on the selection need to be to the target? How is syncretism dealt with?
- The representation of morphological exponents in the lexicon. What kind of information has to be codified in these entries? Do these entries contain specific morphological information not already present in the syntax? How are allomorphy and suppletion represented in the lexicon?
Keynote Speakers:
Paolo Acquaviva, University College Dublin
Karlos Arregi, University of Chicago
Eulàlia Bonet, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
