Meeting Description:

How are spatial relationships expressed in language and how are these related to place and identity construction? Over recent years this issue has been the subject of a lively debate from a wide variety of approaches.

Space/place and identity and their linguistic expression have been studied from many points of view including that of sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, anthropology, the analysis of language - in interaction and multimodality. In addition an approach to the study of space and place and its relation to language is important in disciplines such as geography, architecture and heritage studies. This conference aims to encourage a dialogue and exchange of ideas between diverse perspectives and across disciplinary boundaries. 

The organizers of this conference, researchers at the universities participating in the research project on Space and Identity (Modena, Bergamo, Florence, Rome and Naples 'Orientale') have used an innovative approach focusing on the relation between the discursive construction of space and identity from a corpus linguistics perspective.

In linguistics spatial orientation has traditionally been examined in terms of spatial reference or deixis. There have been various approaches to this - the linguistic approach which describes the formal and functional role of deixis in language, the cognitive approach which has emphasized the description of itineries, perspective taking and frames of reference and the interactive approach which analyses the relation of the speaker to the listener(s) and the co-construction by the discourse participants of the relevant space and place.

Some of these approaches have relied on 'invented' data or elicited experimental data while others have used real life conversational or written data. In addition the use of multimodal sources such as video recordings have helped to enlarge our understanding of the visual and gestural elements in the construction of spatial knowledge.

Call for Papers:

Papers are invited from a wide variety of perspectives. Possible topics for submissions may include (but are not limited to): 

- How knowledge of place is constructed discursively
- The description of spatial relations
- Relation between geographical location and language 
- Language and identity
- Space and gesture
- Phraseological representations of space
- Lived spaces and identity
- Perspective taking/frames of reference
- Representing a multidimensional world in linear speech or writing
- The text world as a conceptual space

All papers are allotted 30 minutes including 10-minute discussion, the official language for presentation is English. 

Abstracts should be submitted either MS Word or PDF in the following format to be included in the book of abstracts:

- Title in Times New Roman 14 (do not use all caps, no bold print) 
- Text 300 words maximum (including references, if any) 
- Times New Roman 12 
- Align text left, single-spaced 
- Do not use any special fonts, such as bold print or caps (italics ok) 
- Do not add tables, photos, or diagrams to your abstract

Abstracts should include details of research methods and brief results (which may be preliminary). Abstracts will be anonymously reviewed. The abstract should be sent to both jbamford at unior.it and gbalirano at unior.it.
